With any commitment comes challenge. Days when you don’t feel like showing up. Days when you tell yourself that it’s not as important as you thought it was. Maybe that’s true – maybe achieving the splits for example isn’t something that has value for everyone. The important part though is your commitment to it. If you committed to it then giving up on it will send this message to yourself: “I don’t follow through with things.” It will subconsciously stop you from setting goals for the future and lower the bar for what you can achieve. This is why it’s so important to keep showing up. It’s proving yourself that you are capable and committed. It’s telling yourself that you can rely on your promises.
The Power Of Bad Days
Bad days usually tempt me to skip whatever lofty goal I set for myself and just keep it easy. Sometimes when it’s for example a rest day that’s completely fine. But if it’s on a day where you told yourself you would show up for yourself, then pushing through the fatigue often results in a newfound inspiration for my goal. It’s like proving my negative and demotivating inner critic wrong. It feels like since I got up to do the thing I now will perform extra well, simply to show off my dedication to that nagging nuisance in my head.
What Helps: Music
I personally love electronic music. There are so many different vibes but when I’m feeling like I need an extra push on a sluggish day I usually go for fast-paced and inspirational songs. This can really help to get you into tunnel vision to focus on whatever it is you need to get done. I recommend finding whatever music does that for you and keeping it as a backup for those days.
Some song recommendations:
Yann Tiersen, 16 1 12 5 19 20 9 14 5 (Live at Trans Musicales Festival)
David Guetta & Bebe Rexha – Im Good (Blue) Live Performance
Proving Your Inner Critic Wrong
As I mentioned earlier, showing up to perform extra well with dedication and passion to me feels like proving that inner critic wrong. It’s like becoming a NFL player after your high school coach told you you suck at football. Only that this time the negative coach is you. Prove that negative voice wrong by showing up and putting in the extra effort. It’ll make you stronger. It’ll strengthen your belief in yourself. And last but not least, it will give you an enormous boost of motivation to see that goal inching closer and closer. You got this!
