Welcome to the first update of my Low Buy Year. This update covers how my spending went in the month of January as well as any thoughts I had regarding the challenge.
How did it go?
January actually went great! The only things I bought that weren’t necessities like food and housing were replacements. I bought some pens and batteries. Pretty basic if you ask me. This month was pretty busy for me, so I wasn’t tempted by free time to go browsing or even think about shopping so much really.
Challenges
I was tempted to buy subscriptions to a streaming service though. After a long day, watching a show can be very relaxing. But I resisted the urge to splurge and made it through the month without subscriptions! Youtube has some pretty good documentaries and random videos on basically anything you might be interested in so I recommend checking it out before subscribing to any paid service.
How to Resist the Urge to Shop
For me, it’s really helpful to have my goals in mind, everyday and every time I feel like spending money on something. Reminding yourself why you do this and where this will bring you can help to make the thing you’re about to buy less enticing. Suddenly the random shirt or trinket will seem meaningless compared to the bigger goal you are working towards.
Going Forward
I’m really excited to see where this challenge will bring me and I hope that you can derive some motivation for yourself from my experience. Setting goals and following through with them can be very empowering. I recently read a tip for a Low Buy or No Buy Year from a YouTuber called Kirsty Kirby that said: “See it as an opportunity”. Seeing this challenge as an opportunity to reach your goals and bettering your future is a great mindset to keep going. I wish you the best of luck!
